Make This Recipe
Ingredients
4 Eggland's Best eggs, Large
1/2 cup unsalted butter
3/4 cup brown sugar, packed
2 tablespoons molasses
6 slices (about 1 inch thick) thick Sourdough bread, or French bread *See Step 2
1 medium naval orange, skin washed (for zesting)
1 1/2 cup unsweetened almond milk (or whole milk)
1/4 teaspoon kosher salt
1 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
3/4 teaspoon ground ginger
1/4 teaspoon nutmeg, freshly grated
1/4 teaspoon ground clove
1/2 teaspoon orange bitters, (or 1 teaspoon orange liqueur)
1 1/2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
Confectioners’ sugar (powdered sugar), to garnish
Preparation
- In a small saucepan (1.5 or 2 Qt.-capacity) melt the butter over medium-low heat. When the butter starts to slightly bubble, add the brown sugar and molasses, stirring the mixture until the brown sugar has dissolved. Turn off the heat, and immediately pour the mixture into a 9x13 inch baking dish.
- Place each slice of bread in the baking dish in a single layer. (Tip: If you don't have a soft and thick sourdough bread, just buy an artisan sourdough loaf so that you can cut the slices thick. If you use French bread, remove the crusts before placing the bread slices in the dish, as French bread typically have thicker and chewier crusts.)
- Zest half of the orange until there is about 1/2 teaspoon. Set aside. Now, slice the orange in half. Wrap the other half of the orange in cling film or a storage bag, and place in the refrigerator. (We will use the wrapped orange half for serving).
- In a medium bowl, whisk the eggs, orange zest, milk, salt, cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, clove, and vanilla together until incorporated. Pour the egg mixture over the slices of bread in the baking dish. Cover with a lid, or cling film and refrigerate for 8 hours, or ideally overnight. (If you don't want to wait overnight, then you can allow the bread to sit for 6 to 8 hours. Then, proceed to Step 5.)
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (177°C). Remove the baking dish from the refrigerator and allow it to sit to reach room temperature (about 15-20 minutes or so).
- Bake for 35-40 minutes, uncovered, until the slices of toast rise and become browned. Serve with a light dusting of Confectioners’ sugar, and orange slices or your preferred seasonal fruit.
