Sustainable Forestry Initiative
Eggland’s Best requires that all egg case shipping cartons must be Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) certified. For more information on the Sustainable Forestry Initiative program click here.
Foam Cartons
Only after in-depth study did we decide to package our Eggland’s Best Eggs in polystyrene foam packaging. We made this decision not only for its superior protection of our eggs, but also for the overall environmental impact of polystyrene vs. pulp paper cartons. It takes 3 times more material in waste paper to make a pulp carton for a dozen eggs than polystyrene foam. The supplier of polystyrene foam cartons has received a number of awards for sustainability and environmental protection including:
- U.S. EPA Stratospheric Ozone Protection Award
- Keep America Beautiful National Recycling Award
- Association of Washington Business Environmental Excellence Award
- Environmental awards from the States of Texas and Indiana
Polystyrene foam cartons have been selected for Eggland’s Best Eggs based on superior protection of shells from damage during transport and to insulate product against exposure to heat.
Maintaining a cold chain from the time of packing through to consumption is a critical contributor to the safety of Eggland’s Best Eggs.
The Eggland's Best Polystyrene Carton is Recyclable
Recycled polystyrene can be used in many other products, such as packaging peanuts, office supplies, home supplies, building materials, and many other packaging uses. As more products are packaged in polystyrene foam, more and more communities are accepting this packaging in their recycling programs.
If your community does not collect and recycle foam egg cartons, you may send clean Eggland’s Best cartons to our carton manufacturer at: Dolco Packaging, PO Box 1005, 2110 Patterson Street, Decatur, IN 46733-5005.
Plastic Cartons
Eggland’s Best selected polyethylene terephthalate (PET) for our Cage-Free and Organic varieties not only for its excellent protection of our eggs, but also because its manufacture minimizes materials used, energy consumed, and waste generated in production.
The Eggland’s Best plastic egg carton is 100% recyclable and is made entirely from 100% recycled materials. The plastic used in the Eggland’s Best plastic carton is made from recycled soda bottles, so the cartons that now safely hold our eggs once packaged soft drinks. The Eggland’s Best PET plastic carton is labeled with the #1 recycling code, which denotes eligibility for recycling by municipal waste collection agencies. PET can be remanufactured to produce polyester fiber, which is used in carpets, insulating fleece for clothing, and containers.
Our carton manufacturer has reduced the waste in the production of our cartons. None of our waste is thrown away. The manufacturer grinds its plastic waste at its own plant and sells it back to the plastic supplier, so that it can be re-melted into sheets of PET plastic. The manufacture of plastic packaging requires less energy to make and results in less pollution than paperboard counterparts.
Biodegradable Pulp Cartons
In select markets, Eggland’s Best Eggs are available in a 100% recyclable and biodegradable pulp paper carton. Pulp paper cartons are based on recycled paper and can itself be recycled after use. By recycling we save resources, create less CO2 emission, and help to solve the ever-growing waste disposal problem.
